Tools of the Trade: Telemark skis, Randonee skis, and have been spotted on a Snowboard
Experience: I’ve been certified for 20+ years: level II Nordic, level II XCD, level I Alpine, level I Snowboard, and added Senior Specialist I in 2008. I relish teaching all levels, all ages. The best lessons are where I learn from my students, whether it’s a “new way” to balance on snow, a 6 year-old’s newest joke, or yet another opportunity to share soaring down the hill.
Background: : I learned to ski as an adult and hopefully will retain my appreciation for how difficult and scary a new learning situation can be. I began as an alpine skier (self-taught – aargh!), gravitated to Nordic, started teaching Nordic and slid back to XCD/Alpine. I began snowboarding when I turned 50 – a first sign of senility? Nope – just a new challenge. I discovered early that for me, teaching was the best way to learn, to improve, and to share. The evolution of equipment and teaching keeps me intrigued and motivated to keep up with change. Skiing/riding with other instructors is just fun, and keeps me working to improve. Skiing/riding with students is just as rewarding – sharing those ‘ah ha!’ moments. “To teach is to learn twice.” Isocrates.
